Dicksonia antarctica, also known as the Tasmanian Tree Fern or Soft Tree Fern, is one of the oldest living plant species on Earth—and it looks the part. With its thick, fibrous trunk and enormous, arching fronds, it adds a dramatic, woodland feel to any shaded garden or lush patio. Each frond can grow several feet long, unfurling slowly from the center like a scroll of green lace.
Native to cool, wet forests of southeastern Australia, this fern brings instant atmosphere and structure to shaded outdoor spaces. It’s long-lived, slow-growing, and deeply textural—ideal for gardeners who appreciate patience and impact.
Light: Bright gentle light to full shade. Protect from direct sun, especially in warm inland areas.
Temperature: Prefers cool to moderate conditions (50–75°F). Can tolerate light frost but not deep freezes.
Humidity: Loves high humidity. Benefits from regular misting or planting in naturally damp areas.
Water: Keep consistently moist, especially in the crown (where new fronds emerge). Water both the soil and the trunk during dry periods.
Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with good organic matter. Prefers slightly acidic conditions.
Fertilizer: Feed with a diluted balanced fertilizer once a month during the growing season, applying directly to the crown.
How to grow Dicksonia antarctica indoors:
This plant is rarely grown indoors due to its size and need for high humidity and air circulation. However, young specimens may be kept in a large container indoors if placed in a cool, bright, and humid environment. Mist regularly, and water directly into the crown.
How to grow Dicksonia antarctica outdoors in the Bay Area:
Dicksonia thrives in coastal Bay Area gardens where fog, cool temperatures, and high humidity mimic its native habitat. In San Francisco, Daly City, Half Moon Bay, and other fog belt regions, it can grow outdoors year-round in shaded or dappled light locations. Inland (Oakland, Berkeley hills, etc.), it may need added humidity, regular watering, and some frost protection in winter. Keep the crown moist at all times.
Pet safe: Yes
Difficulty: Intermediate. Not difficult, but requires consistent moisture and the right microclimate.
