This might be my favorite plant. No, seriously... I got an Alocasia 'Mayan Mask' about a year ago as a hobbyist and it has grown so beautifully and with so much character that at one point I decided it was my very favorite houseplant... even beating out my cherished Monstera Albo. Until last week I actually didn't know its cultivar name - it had simply been sold to me as "Baby Alocasia."
Alocasia 'Upright Mayan Mask' is a new cultivar of Alocasia plant that is characterized by large, arrow-shaped leaves that are 1 to 3 feet in length (age dependant), dark green in color with contrasting lighter green veins on the upper Surface, and dark purple in color on the lower Surface with colors non-fading with Sunlight and age, its leaves that are thick and durable that remain upright with age and are wind tolerant, its light green petioles, its upright plant habit providing good cold tolerance and rot resistance, its ability to produce large stem-like tubers with age, its fast growth rate.
My understanding is that this plant is a patented cross between Alocasia 'Amazonica' and Alocasia macrorrhiza.
This plant is STUNNING. Pictures don't do it justice. And I am so thrilled to be able to offer it in the store for the first time!!
