Senecio tropaeolifolius is a caudex-forming oddball that combines the appeal of a bonsai-like base with the exuberance of trailing, segmented stems. Native to South Africa, this species develops a swollen, woody caudex over time that can be gradually raised and displayed above the soil—giving the plant a dramatic, sculptural presence that only improves with age.

From the top of the caudex, thick, jointed stems grow in segments, each topped with rounded, slightly cupped leaves reminiscent of nasturtium foliage (hence the name tropaeolifolius). As the plant matures, the stems begin to drape and tangle, creating a wild, living cascade. In fall or early winter, you may even be treated to a pop of bright orange daisy-like blooms that rise above the foliage.

This plant thrives in bright light, excellent drainage, and infrequent watering. During the active growing season, allow the soil to dry fully between waterings. In winter, when growth slows, cut back water drastically to protect the caudex from rot. A gritty cactus or caudiciform soil blend is ideal.

Care at a Glance

  • Light: Bright gentle to full sun

  • Water: Water thoroughly, then allow to dry completely; reduce in winter

  • Soil: Very well-draining mix (cactus, succulent, or custom caudex blend)

  • Temperature: Warm temps preferred; protect from frost

  • Growth Habit: Caudex-forming with trailing, jointed stems and rounded leaves

  • Display Tip: Gently raise the caudex over time to highlight its shape

  • Bloom: Orange daisy-like flowers in fall to early winter

A fun and forgiving introduction to caudiciform plants, Senecio tropaeolifolius is ideal for growers who love weird textures, expressive shapes, and sculptural plants that evolve slowly and reward patience. Perfect for shallow pots or elevated displays where the caudex can take center stage.
