They are designed to fit inside the metal rings that typically hold a solid, metal lid in place on canning jars. They measure approximately 2.5 inches in diameter and fit "regular mouth" jars from both popular and generic brands. These inserts are available in a "grid' design with 12 smaller openings (ideal for smaller stems).
