Swirski Ulti-Mites

Organic Biological Pest Control for Thrips, Spidermites, and More

Swirski Ulti-Mites are predatory mites housed in slow-release sachets that offer long-lasting, low-effort protection for your plants. These generalist predators are an ideal organic solution for houseplant collectors, greenhouse growers, and outdoor gardeners looking to reduce or eliminate chemical pesticide use.

Once deployed, the mites emerge gradually over 4–6 weeks, feeding on the eggs and larvae of whiteflies, young thrips, and even spider mites. They’ll also consume pollen, helping them survive in low-prey environments, which makes them perfect for prevention as well as treatment.

What They Control

  • Young thrips larvae (amazing at controlling and preventing thrips populations overall)

  • Whitefly eggs and larvae

  • Some spider mites

  • Pollen (as a supplementary food source)

How They Work

Each sachet contains 250 Amblyseius swirskii mites, which hatch and disperse from the sachet gradually over time. They kill prey by piercing them with their mouthparts and extracting the contents, leaving no residue behind. Mites reproduce inside the sachet while conditions allow, offering ongoing protection for up to a month and a half.

How to Use (General)

  • Hang sachets from the top of your plants using the built-in hook or string.

  • Do not open or pierce the sachet—it already contains an exit hole.

  • Hold by the cardboard tag to avoid disturbing the contents.

  • Avoid placing in direct, hot sunlight.

Indoor Use (Home or Greenhouse)

Swirski mites are ideal for indoor collections, especially in bright windows or warm greenhouses where thrips and whiteflies often thrive. For medium-sized plants, use one sachet per plant. For large specimens, use 2–3 sachets. One sachet may protect several small plants if they are grouped closely together. Do keep sachets out of direct hot sunlight.

They work particularly well as a preventative measure in environments where spraying is undesirable—such as homes with children, pets, or sensitive plants.

Outdoor Use (Bay Area + Mild Climates)

Swirski mites can be highly effective outdoors in warm, sheltered areas such as patios, covered planters, or under shade cloth. Because they are sensitive to low temperatures and low humidity, they are most effective from late spring through early fall in the Bay Area. Avoid deploying during cold or dry weather. Use more sachets in exposed or high-pressure pest environments.

These mites can be combined with predatory nematodes to help control thrips or fungus gnats at the soil level, creating a comprehensive organic pest control system.

Environmental Conditions

  • Optimal temperature: 68–90°F (20–32°C)

  • Minimum effective temperature: 64°F (18°C)

  • Relative humidity: Best above 60%. Reproduction is limited below that threshold, but they may still feed and provide short-term control.

Compatibility

Do not combine with other generalist predatory mites such as Neoseiulus cucumeris, Amblydromalus limonicus, Transeius montdorensis, or Amblyseius andersoni. Safe to use with Orius spp., whitefly parasitoids, and beneficial nematodes.

Pesticide Warning

Avoid use in conjunction with broad-spectrum insecticides or horticultural oils. These can reduce mite survival. If unsure, check compatibility before applying any treatments.

Storage (If Necessary)

Swirski mites are living organisms and should be applied as soon as possible upon receipt.
If immediate use is not possible:

  • Store in the dark for 1–2 days at 50–60°F (10–15°C)

  • Provide ventilation—do not store in a sealed container
