This miniature carrion flower is native to southern Africa and forms a tidy mat of soft, fuzzy stems that resemble a cluster of little cactus arms (but without the spines). It stays petite, making it perfect for windowsills, small-space collections, or mixed succulent displays.
When in bloom, scitula surprises with striking, deep red star-shaped flowers, often with intricate striations and a velvety texture. Like many Stapelia, the blooms have a faint carrion-like scent that attracts pollinators in the wild—thankfully, it’s only noticeable up close and for a short time. Many collectors find the bloom scent mild compared to other species in the genus.
This plant thrives on neglect in the best way. Give it bright, gentle light to full sun (Southern, Western, or Eastern windowsill is ideal), a well-draining cactus mix, and let the soil dry out completely between waterings. It’s sensitive to overwatering and does best with a lean watering schedule, especially in cooler months.
