Meet the plant Charles Darwin famously called "the ugliest plant in the world." Kind of unfair in our opinion! This rare plant is actually even more famous for being one of the longest lived plant in the world - with specimens in the wild estimated to be over 2,000 years old. Our Welwitschia are sustainably grown from seed in Northern California.
The Welwitschia typically has only two leaves that grow continuously from its base throughout its lifespan. These leaves fray and split over time due to desert winds and harsh arid conditoins, giving the plant a ragged, tattered appearance. The two strap-like leaves grow outward from a thick, woody, short trunk. This trunk supports the plant and plays a role in water storage, helping the plant survive in extremely arid conditions.
A few things to know about growing Welwitschia mirabilis
-Though they are drought tolerant, and can easily stay dry for a few months, you can feel fine watering once a week or so if you want the plant to grow faster.
-Its leaves can absorb moisture from fog, and actually likes higher humidity! Perfect for growing indoors or outdoors in San Francisco.
-They do not want to encounter freezing temperatures
-They want full sun, so put it in a nice sunny window
-They have very large tap roots so plant in a deep pot. Even a vase would work!
