Dioon edule, commonly known as the Chestnut Dioon, is an evergreen cycad native to Mexico. It is renowned for its stiff, blue-green leaves that form a dense crown atop a thick, shaggy trunk. This ancient plant species adds a prehistoric touch to any garden setting or as an indoor specimen, and is a staple among cycad collectors.

For proper care, Dioon edule should be planted in well-draining soil and positioned in a spot that receives full sunlight indoors and partial sunlight outdoors. It is drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during its active growing season in the spring and summer. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. When growing this cycad in a container, ensure the pot has ample drainage holes and use a potting mix specifically designed for palms or cycads. Fertilize sparingly; a slow-release, balanced fertilizer applied once at the beginning of the growing season is adequate. Dioon edule is slow-growing and rarely needs repotting. It is also notably cold-hardy among cycads, making it a versatile choice for varying climates.
