Aglaonema ‘Red Army’ is an uncommon Chinese evergreen that combines camouflage-patterned foliage with vivid pink-red veins. Layered shades of green and dark leaf undersides give it a dramatic presence, making it a standout for collectors who love intricate foliage and unexpected color.

Light:
Provide medium to bright, gentle light. An east-facing window, filtered light near a brighter window, or a moderate grow light works well. It tolerates lower light, but brighter indirect conditions support stronger growth and clearer coloration. Avoid direct afternoon sun.

Water: Allow the upper 1 to 2 inches of soil to dry before watering thoroughly. Keep the deeper root ball lightly moist without leaving it saturated, and empty any water collected in the saucer. Reduce watering during cool, low-light periods.

Humidity: Average household humidity is generally suitable, although moderate humidity can help maintain attractive foliage. A greenhouse cabinet is optional. In San Francisco and other coastal Bay Area homes, additional humidity may be unnecessary; in drier Oakland or San Jose homes, consider a humidifier if indoor air is persistently dry.

Soil: Use a moisture-retentive but well-draining houseplant mix with perlite or pumice and a little fine orchid bark. Avoid dense, compacted soil and oversized pots that remain wet for long periods.

Temperature: Aim for approximately 68 to 80°F. Protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F, particularly near windows during Bay Area winter nights. Indoor cultivation is the most reliable local option.

Growth Habit: An upright, leafy plant suitable for tabletop displays when young. Its layered foliage creates a full silhouette, with individual leaves offering different arrangements of green mottling and colorful veins.

Fertilizer: Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to one-quarter or one-half strength approximately monthly. Reduce feeding when growth slows and occasionally flush the substrate to prevent salt buildup.

Flowers: Mature plants may produce small spathe-and-spadix inflorescences among the foliage. These are secondary to the ornamental leaves and may be removed if you prefer a foliage-focused display. No distinct indoor blooming season should be expected.

Pest Care: Inspect leaf undersides, leaf stalks, and stem bases for mealybugs, scale, and mites. Gently wipe away dust so pests are easier to spot, and isolate affected plants promptly. Avoid keeping the substrate constantly wet, which can encourage root problems.

Pet Safety: Toxic to cats and dogs. Like other Aglaonemas, ‘Red Army’ contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing if chewed. Keep it away from pets and contact a veterinarian if ingestion occurs.
