'Alocasia amazonica 'Aurea Splash' is a variegated cultivar of the iconic “Amazonian Elephant Ear,” prized for its vivid chartreuse to golden-yellow splashes across deep green arrowhead-shaped leaves. This mutation is rare, with each leaf emerging with a unique marbled or paint-splattered pattern — no two are alike. Its sharply defined leaf shape, prominent white veins, and high-contrast variegation make it a true statement piece in any tropical plant collection.

Due to its unstable variegation and high-demand rarity, it’s best suited for experienced plant keepers who understand the care needs of Alocasias and want to nurture something exceptional.

Care

  • Light: Bright gentle light to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves, but ensure it gets plenty of ambient brightness to maintain strong variegation.

  • Water: Keep soil lightly moist but never soggy. Allow the top 1–2" of soil to dry out between waterings. Sensitive to overwatering and poor drainage.

  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity (60%+). May benefit from a humidifier in dry environments.

  • Temperature: Thrives between 65–80°F. Keep away from cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.

  • Soil: Fast-draining, chunky mix — equal parts potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark or coco chips is ideal.

  • Fertilizer: Use a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during active growth (spring–summer). Hold off in winter dormancy.

  • Dormancy Note: Alocasias may go semi-dormant in cooler months, slowing growth or dropping leaves — this is normal. Reduce watering and wait for spring regrowth.

Pet Safety

🚫 Not pet safe — toxic if ingested by cats, dogs, or humans.

Indoor vs Outdoor

  • Indoor: Ideal as a dramatic houseplant. Provide extra humidity in drier interiors.

  • Outdoor (Bay Area): Can grow outdoors in warm months in a shaded, sheltered location — container recommended. Must be brought inside before temperatures dip below 55°F.

Dormancy

Semi-dormant in winter months. May drop leaves or slow down dramatically. Reduce watering and resume care as new growth appears in spring.
