Alocasia 'Venom'

Alocasia ‘Venom’ is an extraordinary collector’s cultivar with pale, silvery green leaves, raised sculptural veins, rippling margins, and dramatically elongated tips that curl like fangs. Its eerie, almost otherworldly silhouette makes it unlike any other Alocasia.

Discovered around 2019 by Mason Lee of Mason Plants in South Korea, ‘Venom’ originated as a spontaneous mutation of the classic hybrid Alocasia ‘Amazonica’. Its juvenile foliage begins deep green before maturing to a cool, matte silver-green, while each shield-shaped blade develops pronounced venation and an exceptionally long, twisting tip. The cultivar’s name was inspired by the alien form of Marvel’s Venom, and the resemblance becomes increasingly striking as the plant matures. Still uncommon in cultivation and naturally slow-growing, ‘Venom’ is a true statement specimen for serious Alocasia and rare aroid collectors.

Light: Provide bright gentle light. A position close to an east-facing window or slightly removed from a brighter south- or west-facing window is ideal. Avoid intense afternoon sun, which can scorch the pale foliage.

Water: Water thoroughly once the upper portion of the potting mix has begun to dry, then allow all excess water to drain. ‘Venom’ prefers steady moisture while actively growing but is highly sensitive to prolonged saturation. Avoid letting it remain completely dry for extended periods.

Humidity: Moderate to high humidity helps preserve the plant’s unusually long, delicate leaf tips. Most San Francisco homes may provide adequate ambient humidity, while warmer and drier homes in Oakland, San Jose, and other inland areas may benefit from a nearby humidifier.

Soil: Use a loose, airy aroid mix that holds some moisture while allowing plenty of oxygen around the roots. A combination of quality potting mix, fine orchid bark, perlite or pumice, and coco coir works well.

Temperature: Keep warm and protected from drafts, ideally between 65 and 82°F. Avoid placing it beside cold winter windows, exterior doors, heaters, or air-conditioning vents. Growth may slow or pause during cooler, darker months.

Growth Habit: Upright and self-supporting, with new leaves emerging from a central rhizomatous base. ‘Venom’ is naturally slow-growing, so several weeks between new leaves can be entirely normal. Mature plants may produce corms or basal offsets that can be separated for propagation.

Pet Safety: Not pet-safe. Like other Alocasias, its tissues contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause significant oral irritation if chewed or swallowed. Keep away from pets and small children
