Anthurium bonplandii ‘Pink Variegata’ AKA Variegated Bird’s-Nest Anthurium

Anthurium bonplandii ‘Pink Variegata’ combines the broad, architectural rosette of a bird’s-nest Anthurium with unpredictable splashes of blush pink, cream, yellow, and green. Its substantial, leathery leaves create a striking specimen whose coloration evolves with every new leaf.

Give this Anthurium bright, gentle light to support strong variegation while protecting pale sections from intense direct sun. Allow the upper portion of the potting mix to dry slightly before watering, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain. Use a coarse, well-aerated epiphytic mix containing materials such as orchid bark, coco chips, pumice, and a modest amount of moisture-retentive organic matter. Avoid keeping the roots continuously wet or allowing water to remain trapped around the central growth point. Average humidity in coastal San Francisco, Daly City, and Half Moon Bay is generally sufficient, although plants in warmer, drier parts of Oakland or San Jose may benefit from a humidifier. Warm temperatures and good air circulation encourage steady growth. Because this is a single-crowned, rosulate plant, variegation cannot be managed by pruning as readily as it can in a branching vine. Variation between successive leaves is normal, and slower growth should be expected when a substantial proportion of the foliage lacks chlorophyll. Like other Anthurium, it contains insoluble calcium oxalates and is toxic if chewed, so keep it away from pets and children.
