Light
Bright gentle light is ideal. Insufficient light can soften leaf texture and slow growth, while direct sun may scorch the foliage. Bright filtered light or an east-facing window works well.
Water
Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly. Keep moisture consistent but avoid soggy soil—this species is sensitive to overwatering.
Water note: In San Francisco—and anywhere using the Hetch Hetchy water system—tap water is generally safe to use. In areas with hard water, filtered or distilled water is preferable.
Soil
Use a loose, well-aerated mix. A high-quality indoor potting mix amended with perlite, pumice, or fine orchid bark helps maintain airflow and prevents root issues.
Humidity
Moderate humidity (around 40–60%) is ideal. In many coastal homes, ambient humidity is sufficient. Avoid misting leaves, which can encourage spotting or fungal problems.
Temperature
Prefers stable temperatures between 65–80°F. Protect from cold drafts, heaters, and sudden temperature fluctuations.
Feeding
Feed lightly during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertilizer about once a month. Too much fertilizer can lead to softer growth and reduced leaf definition
