Light
Bright gentle light is key to maintaining the best color. Too little light can cause the foliage to green up; harsh direct sun may scorch the leaves. An east-facing window or bright filtered light works beautifully.

Water
Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly. Keep moisture consistent but never soggy—Begonias are sensitive to overwatering.

Water note: In San Francisco—and anywhere using the Hetch Hetchy water system—tap water is generally safe to use. In areas with very hard water, filtered or distilled water is preferred.

Soil
Use a loose, well-draining mix. A high-quality indoor potting soil amended with perlite, pumice, or fine orchid bark helps protect the roots and prevents compaction.

Humidity
Average household humidity (around 40–60%) is ideal. In many coastal homes, ambient humidity is sufficient. Avoid misting leaves, which can encourage spotting.

Temperature
Prefers stable temperatures between 65–80°F. Protect from cold drafts, heaters, and sudden temperature changes.

Feeding
Feed lightly during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertilizer once a month. Overfeeding can result in softer growth and less defined color.
