Light
Bright gentle light is ideal. Too little light can soften leaf texture and slow growth; direct sun may scorch the foliage. Bright filtered light or an east-facing window works well.

Water
Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly. Keep moisture consistent but avoid soggy soil, which can quickly lead to root problems.

Water note: In San Francisco—and anywhere using the Hetch Hetchy water system—tap water is generally safe to use. In areas with very hard water, filtered or distilled water is preferred.

Soil
Use a loose, well-draining mix. A high-quality indoor potting mix amended with perlite, pumice, or fine orchid bark helps maintain airflow around the roots.

Humidity
Moderate humidity (around 40–60%) is ideal. In many coastal homes, ambient humidity is sufficient. Avoid misting the leaves, which can encourage spotting or fungal issues.

Temperature
Prefers stable temperatures between 65–80°F. Protect from cold drafts, heaters, and sudden temperature changes.

Feeding
Feed lightly during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertilizer about once a month. Overfeeding can lead to softer growth and reduced leaf definition.
