Introduced by noted Begonia hybridizer Patrick J. Worley in 1984, Begonia ‘Lois Burks’ combines B. ‘Mandarin’ with the caudiciform South African species B. dregei**. The resulting hybrid retains the colorful flowers of a cane Begonia while developing an unusually compact, densely branching habit that rarely needs staking. Its combination of silver-spotted foliage, near-continuous orange blooms, and easygoing growth makes it both historically interesting and genuinely rewarding to cultivate. The correct cultivar name is ‘Lois Burks,’ although it is frequently sold as ‘Lois Burke.

Grow
Begonia ‘Lois Burks’ in bright, gentle light to encourage dense growth and abundant flowering, protecting it from intense direct sun. Use a rich, airy potting mix with excellent drainage, and water thoroughly once the upper layer has become slightly dry rather than keeping the soil continuously wet. Average household humidity is usually sufficient, although moderate humidity and good airflow will help keep the foliage looking its best. Pinch or lightly prune the stems to maintain its compact, bushy shape, and fertilize lightly during active growth. Begonias are toxic if ingested, so keep this plant away from pets and children.
