Light
Bright gentle light is ideal. Too little light dulls the pink; too much direct sun can scorch the leaves. An east-facing window or a few feet back from a bright south or west window works well.
Water
Keep soil lightly and evenly moist, but never soggy. Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Begonias dislike sitting in wet soil and will sulk quickly if overwatered.
Water note: In San Francisco—and anywhere using the Hetch Hetchy water system—tap water is generally safe to use. If your local water is very hard, filtered or distilled water is preferable.
Soil
A loose, airy mix is essential. Use a high-quality indoor potting mix amended with perlite or orchid bark to ensure excellent drainage.
Humidity
Average household humidity is usually sufficient. Aim for ~40–60%. Avoid misting the leaves, which can encourage spotting or fungal issues.
Temperature
Prefers warm, stable temperatures between 65–80°F. Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature swings.
Feeding
Feed lightly during the growing season (spring through early fall) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer about once a month.
