Light
Bright gentle light is ideal. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves and flatten their texture. Too little light may result in slower growth and less defined veining.

Water
Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly. Consistent moisture is key, but soggy soil will quickly lead to decline. When in doubt, err slightly on the dry side.

Water note: In San Francisco—and anywhere using the Hetch Hetchy water system—tap water is generally safe to use. In areas with hard water, filtered or distilled water is preferred.

Soil
Use a loose, fast-draining mix. A high-quality indoor potting mix amended with perlite, pumice, or fine orchid bark works well and helps protect sensitive roots.

Humidity
Moderate humidity (around 40–60%) is ideal. In many coastal homes, ambient humidity is sufficient. Avoid misting the leaves, which can encourage spotting or fungal issues.

Temperature
Prefers warm, stable temperatures between 65–80°F. Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Feeding
Feed lightly during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertilizer about once a month. Overfeeding can result in soft growth and reduced leaf quality.
