Calathea dressleri ‘Helen Kennedy’ is an uncommon collector’s prayer plant with an extraordinary checkerboard pattern of deep green and luminous silver-green. Burgundy leaf undersides add another layer of color as the foliage shifts throughout the day. For plant lovers ready to discover something beyond the familiar Calatheas, this striking beauty makes a memorable addition.

Light: Provide medium to bright, gentle light. An east-facing window, filtered light behind a sheer curtain, or a moderate grow light works well. Avoid strong direct sun, which can scorch the leaves and diminish their contrasting pattern.

Water: Keep the root ball lightly and consistently moist, watering as the upper half-inch of substrate begins to dry. Avoid both complete drying and waterlogged soil. Distilled, reverse-osmosis, or clean rainwater is a good choice for maintaining pristine foliage; ordinary carbon-filtered water may not remove all dissolved minerals.

Humidity: Aim for approximately 60 to 80 percent humidity with gentle air circulation. Coastal San Francisco conditions can help, but check humidity indoors, especially when heating is running. In drier Oakland, San Jose, and inland Bay Area homes, a humidifier or roomy greenhouse cabinet can support cleaner leaf edges and smoother unfurling.

Soil: Use a fine to medium-textured, moisture-retentive mix with good aeration. Coco coir or peat blended with perlite or pumice and fine orchid bark works well. Avoid an excessively chunky mix that dries rapidly around the roots.

Temperature: Maintain approximately 68 to 80°F and protect from temperatures below 60°F. Keep away from cold windows, heating vents, and sudden temperature changes. Indoor cultivation is the most reliable option for Bay Area conditions.

Growth Habit: A clumping, rhizomatous perennial with upright leaf stalks and broad, patterned foliage. Allow room around the plant to appreciate its silhouette and daily leaf movements.

Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a balanced fertilizer at one-quarter to one-half strength approximately monthly while new leaves are developing. Pause or reduce feeding when growth slows, and avoid fertilizer buildup in the substrate.

Flowers: Grown primarily for its foliage. Flowering is possible on established plants, but should be considered an occasional bonus rather than an expected indoor display.

Pest Care: Inspect leaf undersides and the bases of leaf stalks regularly for spider mites, thrips, and mealybugs. Isolate affected plants and use a treatment labeled for the pest and indoor ornamentals, testing a small area first.

Pet Safety: Calatheas are listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to cats and dogs, although ‘Helen Kennedy’ is not individually listed. Discourage chewing, since eating plant material can still cause digestive upset.
