Most Pellaea species have slightly leathery, pinnate fronds with a bluish or grey-green cast, and many form neat, arching rosettes over time. They’re particularly well-suited to rock gardens, bright windowsills, or even well-drained containers with gritty soil. Unlike many ferns, they don’t require high humidity or constant moisture to stay healthy—making them a good fit for growers who want a more forgiving fern.
Basic Care of Cliff Brake Fern:
-
Light: Bright indirect light to filtered sun. Some species can tolerate morning or late afternoon sun, especially in cooler months.
-
Watering: Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid soggy conditions—these ferns are more likely to suffer from overwatering than underwatering.
-
Soil: Use a very well-draining mix, such as cactus soil with added perlite or fine bark. They appreciate mineral content and dislike peat-heavy mixes.
-
Humidity: Average indoor humidity is fine. No need for misting or humidifiers.
-
Temperature: Typical indoor temperatures (60–75°F) work well. Protect from cold drafts or extreme heat.
-
Growth Habit: Slow to moderate growers. Can form dense, attractive clumps over time when happy. Regular grooming helps maintain the fern’s shape.
