Cynanchum insigne

Twisted Leaf Cynanchum

Cynanchum insigne is a rare and visually striking succulent in the milkweed family (Apocynaceae), native to southern Africa. Best known for its twisting, flattened stems that spiral and curl as they grow, this plant appears sculpted rather than grown—making it a standout in any collector’s succulent or caudiciform display.

Its sprawling or cascading form makes it well-suited to hanging pots, shallow dish gardens, or raised planters where its movement and shape can be appreciated from all angles. Under bright conditions, Cynanchum insigne may also produce small, starry flowers that offer subtle contrast to its bold form.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright indirect light to partial sun. Tolerates early morning or late afternoon direct light; protect from strong midday sun.

  • Water: Allow soil to dry fully between waterings. Water thoroughly but infrequently. Reduce watering in cooler seasons.

  • Humidity: Adapts easily to low humidity and dry indoor air. No misting required.

  • Temperature: Thrives in 65–85°F. Avoid prolonged exposure to temps below 50°F.

  • Soil: Very well-draining mix—cactus soil with extra pumice or perlite is ideal. Avoid heavy or moisture-retentive substrates.

  • Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.

Blooms

Small, pale green to creamy white star-shaped flowers may appear during the growing season, typically late spring to summer. Blooms are modest and often tucked close to the stem joints, adding to the plant’s quiet charm.

How to Grow Indoors (San Francisco)

Place near a bright window, such as an east- or west-facing sill. Provide strong, indirect light and rotate occasionally to maintain even growth. This species requires infrequent watering and tolerates dry indoor air. San Francisco tap water (from the Hetch Hetchy system) is safe for use.

How to Grow Outdoors (San Francisco)

Can be grown outdoors in warmer months in a bright, sheltered area—such as a covered patio or filtered light zone in a succulent garden. Protect from direct, intense sun and cold night temperatures below 50°F. Bring indoors before the first fall cold snaps. Excellent drainage is essential for outdoor culture.

Pet Safe:

No — As a member of the milkweed family, this plant is not considered pet safe and may cause mild toxicity if ingested. Best kept out of reach of pets and children.
