Drosera aliciae

Alice Sundew

Drosera aliciae, or Alice Sundew, is a compact, rosette-forming carnivorous plant native to the fynbos region of South Africa. Its short, spoon-shaped leaves are lined with glistening tentacles—each tipped with sticky mucilage that traps and digests insects. The rosette shape remains tidy and symmetrical, making this species especially well-suited for terrariums, windowsills, or grouped carnivorous displays.

This sundew is considered one of the easiest Drosera species to grow, making it a fantastic choice for both beginners and collectors. It's especially helpful for managing fungus gnats and other small flying pests indoors.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright indirect to full sun. At least 4–6 hours of bright light daily encourages strong coloration and active dew production.

  • Water: Keep soil consistently moist using only distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water—or San Francisco tap water, which is safe due to the Hetch Hetchy system. Use the tray method: sit the pot in a shallow dish of water and refill as needed.

  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity (50–80%) but adapts to lower indoor levels with consistent watering.

  • Temperature: Thrives between 60–85°F. Tolerates short drops into the low 50s but not frost.

  • Soil: Carnivorous plant mix—usually sphagnum peat with sand or perlite. Do not use standard potting soil.

  • Fertilizer: Not necessary. Plant feeds on insects. Avoid all commercial fertilizers.

Blooms

Drosera aliciae produces delicate pink to lavender flowers on upright stems, often during the summer months. Each bloom is short-lived, but flowering may continue for several weeks. Plants often bloom even when small or young.

How to Grow Indoors (San Francisco)

Ideal for sunny windowsills with at least partial direct light. East- or south-facing windows work well. A humidity tray or glass cloche can help maintain moisture levels but is not required in most homes. Water with safe, mineral-free water and keep soil moist at all times.

How to Grow Outdoors (San Francisco)

Can be grown outdoors in a protected, frost-free location with bright light and consistent moisture. Best grown outdoors from late spring through early fall in a container or tray bog setup. Protect from slugs and snails. Bring indoors when nighttime temps drop below 50°F.

Pet Safe:

Yes — Non-toxic to pets. Its sticky traps are harmless to curious paws.

Why We Love It

Tidy and compact, Drosera aliciae earns its keep as both a beautiful insect trap and a gentle introduction to carnivorous plant care. It's ideal for small spaces, terrariums, sunny kitchens—or anywhere that could use a little gleam and a lot less gnats.
