Euphorbia enopla (Pincushion Euphorbia)

Pincushion Euphorbia is a compact South African succulent with deeply ribbed green stems lined by vivid red points that darken as they age. Although it resembles a cactus, it belongs to an entirely different plant family, and its dramatic “spines” are actually persistent modified flower stalks. Over time, it branches from the base to form a dense, sculptural colony.

Give Pincushion Euphorbia very bright light with several hours of direct sun, acclimating it gradually to prevent scorching. Plant it in a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix in a container with a drainage hole. Water thoroughly only after the soil has dried completely, and water very sparingly during cool, dark winter weather; excess moisture is its greatest risk. Keep it warm and protect it from frost and prolonged cold rain. Normal indoor humidity is appropriate, and only light feeding is needed during active spring and summer growth. Like other Euphorbias, damaged stems release a toxic, highly irritating white latex sap: wear gloves and eye protection when handling or propagating it, keep it away from children and pets, and never touch your face or eyes while working with the plant.
