Exacum affine (Persian Violet)

Persian Violet is a compact flowering plant covered in fragrant, star-shaped blue-violet blooms with brilliant golden centers. Despite its common name, it is not a true violet but a member of the gentian family native to Socotra and southwestern Oman. Its glossy foliage, unusual color, and extended floral display make it a wonderful seasonal jewel for a bright indoor collection.

Give Persian Violet bright, gentle light, including filtered morning sun, and keep it in a relatively cool location away from heating vents and hot afternoon exposure. Maintain the soil evenly and lightly moist, watering when the surface begins to dry but never allowing the pot to remain waterlogged or become severely dry. Moderate humidity, good airflow, and temperatures around 60–75°F help preserve the flowers and prevent rapid decline. Feed lightly with a flowering-plant fertilizer while buds are developing, and remove spent flowers to keep the plant tidy and encourage continued blooming. Persian Violet is naturally an annual or short-lived perennial and often declines after its extended flowering cycle; this is part of its biology rather than necessarily a failure of care.
