Hoya acuta ‘Inner Variegated’ has thick, pointed leaves and creamy white to soft yellow variegation running down the center of each leaf.
This hoya is known for its vigorous growth and strong vining habit. In high light, mature plants may also produce clusters of fragrant, star-shaped blooms—typically pale pink to white with a sweet scent.
Light: Thrives in bright gentle light. Can tolerate a bit of direct morning sun, but protect from harsh afternoon rays to preserve variegation.
Temperature: Happy indoors between 60–85°F.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity (50–70%), but adapts well to most indoor environments.
Water: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Likes to dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid letting it sit in soggy soil.
Potting mix: Loose, well-draining mix—ideally an aroid or chunky hoya blend with bark, perlite, and a bit of organic matter.
Fertilizer: Feed monthly during the growing season with diluted houseplant or orchid fertilizer.
How to grow Hoya acuta ‘Inner Variegated’ indoors:
Place in a bright spot with filtered light and let the soil dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, especially in lower light. Use filtered or distilled water if your tap water is mineral-heavy; San Francisco’s Hetch Hetchy water is generally safe. Provide a trellis or let it trail freely—it’s a fast grower when happy.
How to grow Hoya acuta ‘Inner Variegated’ outdoors in the Bay Area:
Outdoors, this hoya does well in sheltered, frost-free spots like covered patios or sunrooms. Give it bright gentle light, protect from cold snaps below 50°F, and bring indoors when temperatures drop. Perfect for hanging baskets or decorative trellises in warm, protected microclimates.
Pet safe: Yes
Difficulty: Easy to intermediate—rewarding and fast-growing with the right light.
