Hoya bilobata
A compact, trailing hoya with charming foliage and surprise blooms

Hoya bilobata is a petite, fast-growing species loved for its dainty, teardrop-shaped leaves and fine trailing vines. Native to the Philippines, this hoya is well suited to small spaces, terrariums, or hanging planters where its cascading habit can shine. The foliage is matte green, sometimes with a soft reddish blush in high light.

When happy, Hoya bilobata produces clusters of tiny, deep reddish-pink star-shaped flowers with a sweet, fruity scent. The blooms are small but prolific—often appearing several times a year with the right care.

Light: Bright gentle light is ideal. Can handle some direct morning sun, but protect from intense afternoon rays.
Temperature: Thrives in typical indoor temps (60–85°F). Keep away from cold drafts or chills.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity (50–70%), but adapts well to normal household conditions.
Water: Let the top inch of soil dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly but allow excess to drain.
Potting mix: Well-draining hoya or aroid mix—bark, perlite, coco coir, and a touch of soil or compost.
Fertilizer: Monthly during the growing season with diluted orchid or houseplant fertilizer.

How to grow Hoya bilobata indoors:
This plant is perfectly suited for indoor spaces with bright, filtered light. Let it dry slightly between waterings and avoid letting it sit in soggy soil. It thrives in a small pot and will appreciate a trellis or hanging basket. Flowers are more likely with age, high light, and consistent care. Use distilled or filtered water if your tap water is hard—though San Francisco’s Hetch Hetchy water is generally safe.

How to grow Hoya bilobata outdoors in the Bay Area:
In frost-free areas, Hoya bilobata does beautifully outdoors in bright gentle light with protection from wind and cold. Best in sheltered patios or hanging baskets during the warmer months. Bring indoors before temperatures dip below 50°F.

Pet safe: Yes (based on ASPCA guidelines)
Difficulty: Easy to intermediate. Compact, low-maintenance, and rewarding.
