An unusual species in a genus known mostly for waxy, trailing vines, Hoya multiflora stands apart. Its growth is more shrubby than vining, forming upright stems that harden with age and produce clusters of delicate, recurved flowers that resemble tiny shooting stars. Unlike many Hoyas that flower sporadically, H. multiflora is generous with blooms when given steady warmth and moisture.

Botanical Notes

Native to Southeast Asia, Hoya multiflora is found growing in humid lowland forests, often as an epiphyte on tree trunks where filtered light and consistent rainfall support near-continuous growth. Its flowers are notable not only for their shape but also for their faint, honey-like fragrance and the way nectar gathers visibly on the reflexed petals — a trait that fascinates collectors and botanists alike.

While most Hoyas rely on dry cycles to trigger blooms, multiflora prefers slightly moister conditions. The inflorescences emerge from short peduncles that can rebloom multiple times if left undisturbed.

Cultivation

Light: Bright gentle light. Too much direct sun can fade the leaves; too little can reduce flowering. A sunny window is ideal.
Water: Keep lightly moist — never soggy, never bone-dry. This species appreciates a steadier rhythm than most Hoyas.
Humidity: Moderate to high humidity (50–70%) keeps new growth supple and encourages flowering.
Temperature: Ideal range is 65–80°F year-round.
Soil: An airy, fine-bark mix with good moisture retention. A blend of orchid bark, perlite, and peat-based soil suits it well.
Fertilizer: Light but regular feeding during active growth supports its long blooming cycles.

💧 Water note for San Francisco: Tap water from the Hetch Hetchy system is generally safe; distilled or filtered water is optional but beneficial if mineral buildup appears.
