Masdevallia ‘Red Flaming’
(rubicon × coccinea)
Despite the fiery name and parentage, Masdevallia ‘Red Flaming’ surprises with blooms in soft, creamy butter-yellow—sometimes with a hint of blush or peach depending on the lighting and temperature. The flowers are elegant and clean, held just above the foliage on upright stems, with the classic triangular Masdevallia shape and graceful tail-like sepals.
A hybrid of Masdevallia rubicon and Masdevallia coccinea, this plant blends the sturdy habit and cool-growing ease of both parents. It remains compact and tidy, making it perfect for growers with limited space or those working with cool-growing setups like terrariums, grow tents, or bright windows in temperate zones.
It prefers cool to intermediate temperatures, high humidity, and consistently moist conditions. Like most Masdevallias, it does not want to dry out fully but also needs excellent air circulation to prevent rot. Pot in fine bark or long-fiber sphagnum for best results, and keep it in dappled or bright indirect light—no direct sun.
