Orbea semitubiflora is a slender, rarely seen succulent native to Tanzania’s Arusha region. It grows in neat clusters of gray-green stems marked with subtle purple tubercles—each stem just under 4 inches (9 cm) long. Its real charm blooms in summer–fall when small star-shaped flowers emerge at stem tips—deep red–wine in tone with a yellowish center corona and a diameter of about 0.5 inches (1.3 cm)

Care Profile

Light: Bright gentle light; partial shade can work too
Temperature: Likes warmth (ideal: 65–80 °F); minimum around 50 °F during dry dormancy
Water: Water moderately during growth; allow soil to fully dry in winter
Soil: Fast-draining, gritty mix (cactus or succulent media with extra perlite or pumice)
Humidity: Low to moderate — thrives in dry, airy spaces
Difficulty: Intermediate. Prefers precise watering and strong, indirect light

Cultivation Tips

Growing Indoors:
Bright, filtered light is best. Use a gritty, free-draining mix and water only during active growth—allow it to go fully dry when dormant. Clay pots are recommended to avoid moisture buildup and reduce rot risk

Growing in the Bay Area:
In mild coastal microclimates (e.g. San Francisco, Pacifica), Orbea semitubiflora can be experimented with outdoors in a sheltered spot—just ensure it’s not overwatered. In inland areas, or during winter, it’s safer to keep it indoors or under cover to maintain dryness and avoid frost or soggy conditions.
