Sometimes, bigger is better. This dramatic red-toned form of Pinguicula gigantea is a stunning color variant of Mexico’s largest butterwort species. Known for its wide, fleshy leaves that can blush deep pink to burgundy under strong light, this red form combines beauty with a killer instinct—capturing fungus gnats, fruit flies, and other small pests with ease.

Mature plants can reach up to 6–8 inches across, forming symmetrical rosettes that anchor a gnat-free, sculptural display. A natural choice for carnivorous plant collectors or anyone seeking organic, low-maintenance pest control indoors or out.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright indirect light or filtered sun. Strong light brings out the most vivid red coloring. Under grow lights is fantastic.

  • Water: Keep soil moist but not soggy. Use distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water—or tap water if you're in San Francisco or any area served by the Hetch Hetchy system.

  • Humidity: Moderate humidity (50–70%) is ideal, but this species adapts well to most home environments.

  • Temperature: Prefers 60–80°F. Protect from frost and extreme heat.

  • Soil: Loose, well-draining mix—such as a mineral-heavy blend with perlite, pumice, and sand. Avoid rich or fertilized soils.

  • Fertilizer: Not necessary. Feeds on captured insects; avoid supplemental feeding.

Blooms

Produces delicate lavender to pinkish flowers on slender stems, usually in spring or early summer. While not the main feature, the blooms are charming and can last several weeks.

How to Grow Indoors (San Francisco)

Grow near a bright window with strong but indirect light to encourage red pigmentation. Typical humidity levels in San Francisco are usually sufficient. Use only safe, low-mineral water, and avoid placing near heat vents or cold drafts.

Our plants are still young, about the size of a quarter.
