Rhaphidophora hongkongensis

Rhaphidophora hongkongensis is a rarely offered climbing aroid with sleek, elongated foliage and a wild, forest-grown character. Its juvenile leaves begin relatively small and asymmetrical, then become substantially longer and more elegant as the plant establishes itself on a vertical support. Fastening itself with aerial roots, it creates a living column of glossy green foliage without requiring the space of a broad-leaved Monstera.

Give Rhaphidophora hongkongensis bright, gentle light and an airy aroid mix that retains some moisture while draining freely. Water when the upper inch or two has dried, avoiding both prolonged drought and constantly saturated soil. Provide a moss pole, wooden plank, or other vertical support early; keeping the rooting side of the stem against the support encourages attachment and increasingly mature foliage. Warm temperatures and moderate humidity support healthy leaf expansion, although ordinary coastal Bay Area humidity is generally adequate. Feed lightly during active growth and protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below approximately 55°F. Like other aroids, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and should be kept away from pets and children who may chew it
