Rhipsalis boliviana

Commonly sold as Rhipsalis boliviana, this unusual trailing cactus is now botanically classified as Pfeiffera boliviana. Its thin, flattened stems develop deeply notched margins, creating an elegant ribbonlike cascade punctuated by small cream to pale pink flowers. Native to Bolivia, it offers the softness and movement of a tropical foliage plant with the strange botanical architecture of an epiphytic cactus.

Give Pfeiffera boliviana bright, gentle light, including filtered morning sun but protection from intense afternoon exposure. Grow it in an airy epiphytic mix containing fine bark, potting soil, and perlite or pumice, and water thoroughly when the upper portion begins to dry; it appreciates more consistent moisture than a desert cactus but will rot in stagnant or saturated soil. Moderate humidity and good airflow support healthy growth, and ordinary coastal Bay Area humidity is generally suitable. Keep it warm but not excessively hot, protect it from frost and cold drafts, and feed lightly during spring and summer. An elevated planter or hanging basket gives its deeply notched stems room to form their full cascading display.
