Roridula gorgonias is a striking, truly rare upright-growing carnivorous plant native to the Western Cape of South Africa. Unlike most sticky-leaved carnivores, it doesn’t digest insects directly—instead, it forms a fascinating mutualistic relationship with specialized assassin bugs that feed on the trapped prey and leave nutrient-rich droppings that the plant then absorbs. With its deep green, narrow leaves densely covered in sticky, glistening hairs, R. gorgonias resembles a dew-drenched cypress seedling and brings a dramatic, alien elegance to any carnivorous collection.

This species prefers bright light, excellent air circulation, and cool, Mediterranean-like conditions. Though it’s relatively easy to grow with the right care, it’s best suited for intermediate to advanced growers due to its specific environmental needs.

Care Guide

  • Light: Full sun to bright indirect light. Outdoors, provide at least 6 hours of direct sun. Indoors, supplement with strong grow lights if natural light is limited.

  • Water: Prefers evenly moist—but not wet—soil. Use distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water. San Francisco tap water is also safe due to the Hetch Hetchy system. Avoid standing water and allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings.

  • Humidity: Moderate humidity (40–60%) is ideal. Avoid overly damp or stagnant environments.

  • Temperature: Thrives between 50–80°F. Prefers cool nights and moderate days. Avoid temps above 90°F or below 40°F.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining, low-nutrient mix such as peat, sand, and perlite. Avoid traditional carnivorous plant mixes with sphagnum moss—it prefers slightly drier, looser substrate.

  • Fertilizer: Not necessary. If assassin bugs (Pameridea spp.) are not present, occasional feeding with insects or a very dilute foliar spray of orchid fertilizer may help.

Blooms

Roridula gorgonias produces large, soft pink to lavender flowers on upright stems, typically in late spring to summer. Flowers are surprisingly showy and resemble those of a small ornamental shrub—adding to its surreal, shrub-like presence.

How to Grow Indoors (San Francisco)

Best grown in a cool, very bright room with excellent airflow. A south-facing window or grow light setup is essential. Do not enclose in high-humidity terrariums—this species prefers drier air. Use a tall, well-draining pot and keep soil slightly moist. Avoid overwatering and heat buildup near windows.

How to Grow Outdoors (San Francisco)

This plant can be grown outdoors in a bright, sheltered location such as a covered porch or greenhouse with excellent ventilation. Protect from heavy rain and extreme temperature swings. Best performance is seen in late spring through early fall. Bring indoors or protect during colder months when temperatures may drop near 40°F.

Pet Safe:

Yes — Non-toxic to pets. Its sticky foliage may be a curiosity to animals but is not harmful.

Why We Love It

Elegant and otherworldly, Roridula gorgonias is one of the most visually arresting carnivores we grow. With its towering habit, sticky leaves, and surprisingly showy blooms, it bridges the worlds of sculpture and science. It’s a conversation piece, a botanical oddity, and a satisfying challenge all in one.
