Sarcocaulon vanderietiae is an unusual, highly architectural succulent from the arid deserts of Namibia and Angola. Known for its spiny, sculptural stems and waxy, flammable coating (a trait shared with other “Bushman’s Candles”), this species has adapted to some of the most extreme dry conditions on earth. In cultivation, it’s a true collector’s plant—slow-growing, low-maintenance, and visually striking.
This species produces small, fern-like leaves during its active growing season, which often appear after a deep watering or seasonal change. Though mostly grown for its form, it may also produce delicate blooms in pink, white, or purple depending on the form and environmental conditions.
Care Guide
-
Light: Full sun to very bright light. Needs strong light to thrive and retain compact form.
-
Water: Water deeply but infrequently. Allow soil to fully dry between waterings. Reduce watering during winter dormancy.
-
Humidity: Prefers low humidity. Tolerates dry indoor environments well.
-
Temperature: Thrives in 65–90°F. Protect from frost; bring indoors if temperatures drop below 40°F.
-
Soil: Excellent drainage is essential. Use a gritty cactus or succulent mix with extra pumice or sand.
-
Fertilizer: Feed lightly in spring and summer with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer, once a month or less.
Blooms
When conditions are right, Sarcocaulon vanderietiae may produce delicate five-petaled flowers in pale pink or soft white. Blooming typically occurs in spring or summer and is most likely after a period of dry dormancy followed by watering. Flowers are short-lived but add a surprising softness to the plant’s otherwise armored form.
How to Grow Indoors (San Francisco)
Place in the sunniest window available—south or west-facing is ideal. Rotate occasionally for even growth. Avoid overwatering; it prefers dry air and infrequent moisture. San Francisco tap water is generally safe due to the Hetch Hetchy system, but allow soil to dry thoroughly between waterings.
How to Grow Outdoors (San Francisco)
Grow outdoors in a full-sun location with excellent drainage. Ideal for balconies, rock gardens, or protected patio containers. Protect from prolonged rain or cold snaps below 40°F. Bring indoors during winter or heavy coastal fog. Best performance is seen from late spring through early fall.
This plant is not considered pet safe due to its spines and potential skin or oral irritation if chewed. Best kept away from curious animals and small children.
