Sarracenia flava var. rubricorpora is one of the most visually striking forms of the Yellow Pitcher Plant. Known for its deeply pigmented pitchers, this variety can develop rich burgundy-red coloration throughout the entire tube, especially when grown in strong light. The hoods remain a glowing green, often edged in red, creating an unforgettable contrast that makes rubricorpora a true standout in any collection.

Native to the Florida Panhandle, this variety grows tall, upright pitchers in spring and early summer, often reaching 18–28 inches or more in height. Like all Sarracenia flava, it produces nodding, lemon-yellow flowers in early spring, long before the first traps emerge. In fall, many plants also send up a flush of late-season pitchers—often even darker in color.

Rubricorpora thrives in full sun and prefers to be grown outdoors in bog setups or large pots, where it can receive the light and seasonal variation it needs. It requires a cold winter dormancy, during which the plant will die back to the rhizome before regrowing in spring.

Care at a Glance

  • Light: Full sun (6+ hours daily) for best color development

  • Water: Tray method; use distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water

  • Soil: 1:1 peat moss and perlite or silica sand (nutrient-free)

  • Dormancy: Requires cool winter dormancy (roughly Nov–Feb)

  • Growth Habit: Tall, upright pitchers with rich red coloration; lemon-yellow spring flowers

A Note on Watering (for Bay Area growers):
While most carnivorous plants are sensitive to tap water, San Francisco Bay Area residents are fortunate—our tap water comes from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir and is low in dissolved minerals. In most cases, it's safe to use for your carnivorous plants. For extra caution, allow tap water to sit out overnight before using.
