Sarracenia ‘Adrian Slack’
Named after the legendary British carnivorous plant grower Adrian Slack, this is one of the most celebrated and sought-after pitcher plants in cultivation. It is prized for its elegant form, combining tall, graceful pitchers with exceptional coloration. Mature plants produce large white lids accented by dramatic pink-red veining and deep red throats, creating a striking contrast that stands out even in advanced collections.
What makes ‘Adrian Slack’ especially desirable is that it consistently displays these exceptional traits generation after generation through division. While many Sarracenia hybrids are attractive, few achieve the combination of vigor, size, symmetry, and refined coloration that made this cultivar famous. It is often considered a benchmark for excellence among ornamental pitcher plants.
Because true divisions can only be propagated vegetatively and the plant grows relatively slowly compared to common hybrids, genuine specimens remain limited in supply. This scarcity, combined with decades of collector demand and its reputation as one of the finest Sarracenia cultivars ever produced, often makes ‘Adrian Slack’ significantly more expensive than similar-looking hybrids.
Light: Full sun outdoors for best color and pitcher production.
Water: Keep consistently moist using distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water. Sit the pot in a shallow tray of water during the growing season.
Soil: Carnivorous plant mix free of fertilizers, typically sphagnum peat moss and perlite.
Dormancy: Requires a winter dormancy period each year. Pitchers may decline in winter before new growth emerges in spring.
Pet Safety: Non-toxic, though curious pets may damage the pitchers.
Blooming: Produces tall spring flowers before the main flush of pitchers emerges.
