Ceiba speciosa (Silk Floss Tree)

Silk Floss Tree is a spectacular South American tree with a prehistoric appearance. Its green, water-storing trunk develops dramatic conical prickles, while its palmate foliage creates a light tropical canopy. With maturity, the tree produces large pink-and-cream flowers followed by seedpods filled with silky white floss. Every stage of its growth offers something unusual, making Ceiba speciosa an exceptional long-term specimen for collectors with the space to grow it.

Water young plants thoroughly when the upper portion of the soil has dried. During warm weather, regular deep watering supports root establishment and vigorous growth.

This is a large landscape tree. Outdoors and under favorable conditions, it may eventually reach approximately 35–60 feet tall and develop a broad canopy. Ceiba speciosa is deciduous or seasonally deciduous. It may lose most or all of its leaves in response to cool temperatures, shortening days, or seasonal dryness. This is a normal part of its growth cycle. Do not attempt to prevent dormancy by increasing water.
