Velvety, dramatic, and often unfairly overlooked, Gloxinia plants are prized for their lush foliage and show-stopping flowers that look almost too perfect to be real. Most commonly, you'll encounter Sinningia speciosa—a species long cultivated for its large, bell-shaped blooms in vivid jewel tones.
Though often sold as temporary bloomers, Gloxinia are actually perennials and can be encouraged to flower again with the right care. After flowering, the plant may go dormant briefly before regrowing from its tuber. Treat it right, and it will reward you with waves of blooms and soft, textural foliage year after year.
☀️ Bright, gentle light
Too much sun can scorch the leaves; too little and blooms may fade early. East-facing windows are ideal.
💧 Water when the top inch of soil feels dry
Use room-temperature water and avoid getting the leaves wet, as they’re prone to spotting. During dormancy (after blooms fade and leaves yellow), water sparingly until new growth resumes.
🌡️ Loves warmth (65–75°F)
Protect from drafts or cold windows. Doesn’t tolerate frost.
💨 Moderate humidity preferred
A pebble tray or room humidifier can help if your air is very dry, but avoid misting.
🌱 Rest and rebloom
After flowering, the plant may go dormant. Let it rest in a cool, dry spot, then resume watering when new growth emerges from the tuber.
