Why We Love It
Graceful and endlessly variable, Streptocarpus — commonly called the Cape Primrose — offers a delicate counterpoint to heavy-textured foliage plants. Our assorted collection features hybrids and unnamed cultivars that showcase the genus’s remarkable range: fluted petals in shades of violet, white, rose, and indigo, all carried on slender, arching stems above velvety green leaves.
Though each hybrid is different, all share the same ethereal presence — light-catching flowers that hover like small watercolor paintings suspended in air.
Botanical Notes
Native to the misty forest understories of South Africa and Madagascar, Streptocarpus species evolved to thrive in cool, shaded, and consistently moist environments. The genus name translates to “twisted fruit,” referring to its distinctive spiral seed pods.
Modern hybrids are bred for compact growth and extended bloom cycles, often flowering for months at a time indoors. Their soft, textured leaves arise from a basal rosette, and new flower stalks continue to emerge sequentially from the crown. Unlike many tropical bloomers, Streptocarpus appreciates gentle air movement and slightly cooler nights — echoes of its montane origins.
Cultivation
Light: Bright gentle light with no direct midday sun. East-facing windows or filtered western light are ideal.
Water: Keep soil evenly moist, allowing the surface to dry slightly before re-watering. Avoid letting water sit on the leaves or crown.
Humidity: Prefers 50–70%. In coastal Bay Area homes, ambient humidity is often sufficient.
Temperature: Cool to moderate household temperatures (60–75°F) encourage continuous bloom.
Soil: Light and airy; African violet mix with added perlite or fine bark works well.
Fertilizer: Use a diluted, balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during the active growing and blooming season.
💧 Water note for San Francisco: Tap water from the Hetch Hetchy system is generally safe for Streptocarpus; switch to filtered if leaf tips brown or residue forms on soil.
