Vriesea Bromeliad

A member of the vibrant bromeliad family, Vriesea species are prized for their dramatic, sword-like inflorescences and elegant, often patterned foliage. These epiphytic plants hail from Central and South America, where they grow perched on trees, drawing nutrients from rainwater and debris.

Most Vriesea feature soft, strap-shaped leaves arranged in a central rosette that collects water—a natural reservoir mimicking their rainforest home. Their flowers, when present, often rise like a flame from the center, with bold bracts in shades of red, orange, or yellow.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, filtered light is best. Protect from harsh, direct sun which can scorch the leaves.

  • Water: Keep the central cup (or "tank") filled with fresh, non-chlorinated water. Empty and refill weekly to avoid stagnation. Water the soil lightly when it begins to dry out.

  • Humidity: Loves high humidity (60%+). Mist regularly or place near a humidifier in drier environments.

  • Temperature: Prefers temps between 65–80°F. Keep away from cold drafts and frost.

  • Soil: Use a very well-draining mix—orchid bark with a bit of peat or coco coir works well.

  • Fertilizer: Use a bromeliad-safe fertilizer diluted to ¼ strength, applied monthly to the soil or the tank (avoid overfeeding).

Why We Love It

Vriesea brings a tropical, otherworldly vibe to indoor spaces, whether it's showing off a fiery bloom or simply flaunting its lush, sculptural form. Long-lasting and low-maintenance, this plant is an art piece as much as a houseplant. It's equally happy in a pot or mounted on wood with moss for a more naturalistic display.
